A QUESTION THAT CHANGED THE DIRECTION
“What do you sell?”
Klowd’s mother asked Rue during his first visit to New Game Studios. Event tickets were one answer. But she wanted to support the brand without coming to a party. What could she buy when the event was over?
That question helped lead to RUEVADO in 2022. The book follows the same question into identity, craft, money, community and the work we leave behind.
Rooted in Y’senrue “Rue” Small’s account: fatherhood at seventeen, returning for his GED, Artwear Gallery, co-founding Gwalla Trees LLC with Joshua “JD” in 2020, Network N Chill and his work in education. With credit to Henry, JD, Drippy Jai, King Leon X, Klowd and the wider creative team.

The Unfinished Self
A beginning is not a verdict.
An unfinished piece is easy to misunderstand. Its gaps are visible. Its possibilities have not yet taken form.
People can be treated that way too. A grade, a job title, a bank balance or an early mistake becomes the visible edge of a much larger life. The danger begins when you accept the edge as the whole picture.
I dropped out of school. That is a fact in my history. So is returning for my GED. So is becoming an educator. None of those facts makes sense if the first is allowed to forbid the others.
This does not mean the past is powerless. It can leave debts, habits, obligations and consequences. A useful account of your life needs room for those things. But an account should tell you where you are standing. It should not quietly declare that movement is impossible.
Imagine a garment laid across a table. A seam has opened. You can inspect the fabric, decide whether the damage can be repaired and choose a new use for it. You have options because you are looking at the material. If all you can see is the word ruined, the options disappear before you examine them.
We started painting clothes we already owned. Existing material gave us a place to make a decision. The clothing did not have to arrive from a perfect beginning to receive a new form.
The first work of a creative life is often this kind of inspection. What can you actually do? What are you learning? Who depends on you? Which tools can you use today? What has experience taught you to notice that another person might miss?
Do this without decorating the answer. If you have edited one video, you have edited one video. You do not need to call yourself a master to make the next one. If you are starting again after ten years, those years do not vanish because your portfolio is small. Look for the abilities inside them: listening, handling pressure, recognizing a pattern, preparing a room or keeping track of details.
The stone in the opening image is rough because it has not been fully worked. Roughness gives the hand information. It shows where the next cut belongs. Treat a limit that way: as information about the next decision, rather than a description of your entire being.
Tonight, take a page and give it three headings: what happened, what I made it mean, what remains possible. Put one difficult fact beneath the first heading. Beneath the second, write the conclusion you have attached to it. Beneath the third, name a specific action that the fact does not prevent.
I left school. I decided that meant I was not capable of learning. I can still ask for instruction, practice a skill or return through another route. The action will not rewrite the old record. It can begin a new one.
You are allowed to begin before your life makes an impressive introduction.
Remember the garment on the table. You cannot work with it while refusing to touch it. The next chapter begins with the attention you give to what is actually there.

The story leads into decisions about craft, an offer, costs, sharing work, collaboration and evidence. A thirty-day sequence and working prompts help readers use the ideas with tools they already have.
What do the images mean?
The mirror, crucible, bridge, scale, open stage, gate and rose form an original visual language. Their meanings are explained in the prose. They invite reflection and do not claim supernatural powers or ancient provenance.
Does it promise a particular outcome?
No. The book offers a perspective and practices readers can test. It does not guarantee wealth, fame, health or immortality. Spiritual references, historical context and empirical evidence are distinguished in its notes.
